An affectionate and well-deserved sidebar to the Infinity conference, was the award to Dan Poynter by Infinity President, Tom Gregory, of the first annual Infinity Ben Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award in Book Publishing.

"Dan Poynter has unselfishly given tens of thousands of writers the tools they needed to realize their dream to become published authors," Gregory said. And the cherrywood plaque extended to him read, "Author, publisher of more than 120 books. Worldwide ambassador for the publishing industry. Freely sharing his wit and wisdom. Advocating getting the book inside you out!"

In an announcement, Infinity explained that "John Franklin Harnish is Infinity Publishing's Special Projects Director and creator of The Ben Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award in Publishing. An unclaimed descendent of the venerable Franklin, Harnish was part of the selection process of Poynter for first recipient."

"Like Franklin," the announcement said," Poynter's life is crowded with pioneering firsts as both author and publisher. His first self-published book, a hang gliding instructional published in 1973, sold for 10 years. Through that initial publishing experience Poynter recognized the need to demystify publishing, and began with the first laser-typeset book. His industry-popular 'Bible,' The Self-Publishing Manual, How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book (1979) celebrates its 16th edition, with more than 30% of the book revised."
