Current event books dealing with very time-sensitive topics aren’t candidates for traditional book publishing. It can take a traditional publishing company from 18 to 24 months of hurried efforts to hasten a book through their publishing process and have it ready for distribution. China Attacks, a contemporary novel by Chuck DeVore and Steven W. Mosher, is an excellent example of a timely topic that couldn’t wait for the slow-turning wheels of a traditional book publishing company. Chuck and Steve are both traditionally published authors. They have years of Far East experience and knew that the potential of world events involving China would greatly help to promote the sale of their book. Their rush to publish was because real world events were on a course similar to events included in their work of fiction. Each month their book would have been delayed in a traditional book publisher’s production department, would have reduced their window of opportunity to capitalize on media coverage involving China. China Attacks sold very well during the China spy-plane incident. The nature of international relations and the authors’ telling of the events in a book of fiction could explode into reality any day. Infinity Publishing produced their 415-page book, China Attacks, in less than two weeks. The digital book publishing process greatly expanded their window for international exposure and provided a platform for the authors to explain some of China’s veiled goals. China Attacks is an excellent example of how a book on a timely topic benefits from early market positioning.
Most of the traditional book publishers won’t consider publishing books of poetry, collections of works by less than well-known authors, memoirs and autobiographies by not-so-famous writers. However, these kinds of books do well as self-published, print on demand books. If only a few hundred of these special interest books sell, there’s still a profit for the authors even though personal reflection books by the “unfamous” aren’t an easy sell regardless of how they’re published. Also, an author’s work will be in print for decades into the future for friends and family to order and enjoy. Book buyers—especially independent bookstores—in increasing numbers are seeking out special topic books that they know they can only find in the print on demand publisher’s inventory. Our self-published authors are able to enjoy more creative freedom because they’re writing beyond the box. They know their print on demand books will be published and available for sale.
